Gaddafi forces kill 11 in Misratah

Troops loyal to embattled Libyan ruler Muammar Gaddafi have shelled the key western city of Misratah, killing at least 11 revolutionary fighters.

Opposition sources say at least 11 people were killed in the fighting that began late Monday and continued Tuesday.

The Tuesday attack also wounded 57 people, many of them in critical condition.

Libya has been the scene of intense fighting between the revolutionaries and government forces since mid-February. The deadly conflict has left scores of people dead.

NATO air strikes against the capital Tripoli and other cities have also claimed many civilian lives.

The US-led military alliance has admitted that its forces have killed scores of civilians and wounded many others in the ongoing aerial attacks on key Libyan cities.

Tripoli and some western provinces remain under Gaddafi's control while the revolutionaries hold Benghazi, most of the east and several western cities.

Revolutionary forces want an end to Gaddafi's decades-long rule.

NATO has recently intensified its attacks on Libya in an alleged attempt to increase pressure on Gaddafi.
