Anjum Aqeel escape: 32 arrested, presented in court

The anti- terrorism court (ATC) on Saturday granted remand of thirty-two suspects arrested in providing help to Anjum Aqeel to escape from jail, Geo News reported.

These 32 suspects were arrested last night where they were forcefully trying to free Aqeel from Shalimar Police Station.

They were presented in the ATC, Rawalpindi in strict security following the legal procedures by the police. The eleven suspected culprits were given in the police custody after the court approved their physical remand while twenty-one were sent to Adiala jail after judicial remand was given.

Despite being directed by his party, Anjum Aqeel has not turned himself over to the police. PML-N leader, Senator Pervez Rasheed said that strict action will be taken against Anjum Aqeel.

Aqeel was arrested in connection with the National Police Foundation case from the FIA office. While he was arriving at the Shalimar police station, his supporters attacked the police car. Aerial firing and fighting ensued and his supporters managed to free Aqeel from police custody and he fled from the police station.

Speaking to media after arriving at the Shalimar police station, IGP Islamabad Bin Yamin said that 400-100 people were involved in the incident and the police has started an investigation to arrest them.

Interior Minister Rehman Malik took notice of the incident and ordered the arrest of SP and SHO of the concerned police station for negligence.

Meanwhile police launched a case against Aqeel and his supporters, entry and exit points of Islamabad were sealed.
