Funds not made available for potable water supply to people; SC

ISLAMABAD: Supreme Court, which had earlier sought detailed report on long-term projects designed to make Manchar Lake and others contamination free, was told that a sum of Rs29 billion would be required for making Sindh’s Manchar Lake alone pollution-free, while the court expressed its displeasure on the delay in providing funds for this project

A three-member bench headed by Justice Shakirullah Jan was hearing the suo motto case pertaining to high levels of contamination in Manchar Lake.

Wapda, irrigation department and Sindh government today submitted a joint report relating to the project for making the Lake pollution-free, which said that the total cost of the long-term project pertaining to the Lake was estimated at Rs29 billion, while for the underway projects a sum Rs5 billion has been sought from the federal government, yet to be received.

A member of the bench Justice Sarmad Jalal Usmani in his remarks lamented that so much being spent on the prime minister’s tour, while the funds for supply of potable water to the people not being given.
