Vyacheslav Gasanov, a spokesman for the ministry’s branch in Dagestan, said that the officer of the Federal Security Service, the main KGB successor agency, was shot dead by an unidentified gunman early Monday in the provincial capital, Makhachkala.
Gasanov said that a militant suspected of involvement in sending suicide bombers to Moscow also was shot and killed in a separate incident in Makhachkala on Sunday.
A suicide bomber killed 36 people at Moscow’s biggest airport in January in the attack that underlined the growing challenge posed by the Islamic rebellion that has spread across Russia’s North Caucasus region following two separatist wars in Chechnya.
