60 killed, 120 injured in Afghan blast

At least 60 people have been killed and 120 others injured in a car bomb explosion targeting a hospital in Afghanistan's Logar province.

"As a result of this heartbreaking incident, 60 of our countrymen including children, women, youths and men... have been martyred and 120 others including health workers have been injured," a statement by the ministry of public health said.

The blast took place on Saturday in the Azro district of Logar province, some 25 miles (40 kilometers) east of Kabul, a Press TV correspondent reported.

The blast was caused by an SUV packed with explosives and driven by an attacker.

The Taliban have denied responsibility for the Saturday deadly attack.

"We condemn this attack on a hospital... whoever has done this wants to defame the Taliban," Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said.

The Taliban militants have carried out many deadly attacks on Afghan police, government officials and foreign forces.

However, hundreds of civilians have been killed during the violence in Afghanistan.

The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) said May was the deadliest month since 2007 for Afghan civilians with 368 deaths.

UNAMA Director for Human Rights Georgette Gagnon has expressed concern that “civilian suffering will increase even more over the summer fighting season which historically brings the highest numbers of civilian casualties.”

At least 2,777 civilians were killed in 2010, according to the United Nations.
